First Win of the Season for Chris
03-03-2008
Chris was the Advanced Am winner at the 'Spring Fling' Disc Golf tournament at Quarry Park, Leamington Spa at the weekend.
The Spring Fling was the second BDGA tour event of the season and 58 disc golfers took part, many new to the game. The wind was up on the Saturday morning and many players lost discs in the River Avon which flows along side some of the holes.
In the morning Chris played with Dan Massie and his 9 year old son Jack and started on the 10th hole. It was Jack's first tournament and he played very well to avoid all the trees and the river! Jack scored many 5's and 6's and on the last hole managed to shoot one shot less than his dad, which was a great acheivement! In the afternoon, Jack even scored some 4's - and that was playing from the pro tees!

Dan played well too while guiding Jack around the course. Chris canned a birdie putt early in his round from over 30 metres (hole 14). Waiting on the 14th tee was Andy Ferguson, an Auzie disc golfer who plays in the open division. After seeing Chris's long putt he had his eye on the basket and struck an ace with his bright pink Star Destroyer from 102m! Chris heard the basket crash behind him and then looked to the tee to see everyone cheering with high fives all round.

CTS coach Simon Fox (right) who was playing with Fergy said the disc set off to the left and drifted right on the wind. It looked like was going to clip the trees in the OB pen on the right when it slowed down and headed straight into the middle of the basket. It was Fergy's third ace of his career, but it was the longest. WELL DONE!
After all this drama, Chris got into his stride and shot a round of 64 to put him in the lead. In the afternoon Chris improved with a 62 to put him 7 shots clear overnight. In the morning Chris's lead was diminished after 9 holes due to a solid performance from an ex-ultimate player knicknamed 'Village'. Chris then got in the zone to shoot the following 9 holes in 28 shots, 1 over par. This took Chris into the final with a 3 stroke lead.... and o cut a long story short, Chris was not caught up and finished 6 shots clear!
The Intermediate Ams was won by American student Ben Goeckner. CTS coach Matt Cutler earned joint 4th place in the open division and is looking forward to travelling up to Northumberland for the 'Burnlaw Snow Bow' at the end of March to compete again.

It was business as usual for Derek Robins who shot a solid 55 on the Saturday morning and went on to seal a comfortable victory in the opn division from there. Del brought play to a close with a magnificent drive on 18 to the delight of all onlooking players outside the clubhouse - landing his Champion Firebird just a metre from the basket for birdie. NICE ONE DEL!

The tournament was a great success thanks to all the preperation from Mr Robins and his helpers, including Louise who made loads of tasty soup for everyone!
