Disc Golf Showdown in Billingham
25-08-2009
Chris and Rick visited the glorious John Whitehead park near Billingham town centre on Monday to introduce Disc Golf to the Teesiders.
A tidy little 6 hole course was prepared using portable targets, incorporating a variety of hole types and even junior tees for the little-uns. Chris and Rick a.k.a. the 'Boss Brothers' both set a course record of 14 in the morning and throughout the day the scores of the newbies gradually got lower and lower. As the sun shone down, boys and girls of all ages joined in the fun, parents got involved and several grandparents had a go and caught the spirit too! Chris and Rick were buzzzin' with their demos, peppering the target from 50 to 70 metres, just purring for that illusive ace. This helped capture the imagination of a dozen or so very keen teenage lads who persevered throughout the day before taking part in a mini-tournament in the late afternoon. Many scored sub-20 scores, with 13 year old Tommo (similar natural flare to that of Scotland's young Disc Golf wizard 'Wee Ben Bruce') and 15 year old Gibbo (a county-level discus thrower) both shooting very solid 16's to force a sudden death play-off.

By this time some gentle drizzle had arrived, which made the atmosphere among the pair and the gallery even more intense. Both players drove 45 metres into the centre of the fairway, side by side, on the first hole to set them up for 3's. On the second hole, both shot steady 3's once more. Then on the 3rd play-off hole, Gibbo out-drove young Tommo by 5 metres to put some pressure on. Tommo replied with a smooth approach, leaving only a 6 metre putt. Gibbo let his hyzer out to the left to leave a 9 metre putt from behind a tree. Gibbo held his nerve to seal his par 3. Tommo, clearly absorbed by the occasion, let his putt slide to the right. Doh! No thanks to the heckler saying 'miss, miss, miss' in his ear.

So well done Gibbo with the victory!!! And jolly well done to Tommo as well. Both players got to keep their disc for their efforts. Most of the people who joined in displayed superb etiquette and ever-improving skills in the way of the disc. A couple couldn't stop themselves from steeling discs - you know who you are (and so do we thanks to CCTV - send em back without delay or we'll send the FED's).
With a bit of luck, before too long, there could be a permanent Disc Golf course in the area, so let's hope the lads and other Teesiders keep practicing in the meantime!!
The Boss Brothers would like to thank Emma Turnbull Stockton Borough Council for organising the event and inviting Catch the Spirit to come along and spread the word. Many happy memories for all and many seeds planted for the future of the sport in the region.
