Croydon Cyclone '09
07-09-2009
Nate Doss wins the Croydon Cyclone scoring 3 rounds of 47 (-30) followed by best buddy, Avery Jenkins. Our very own Rick Murphy won the Advanced Amateur division followed by Sweden-based Jared Farrell.
The event attracted a lot of attention from the British Disc Golf community, with a record-breaking 73 turning out for the tournament! With help from the Croydon DG posse and some excellent dinner ladies it was an excellent weekend enjoyed by all.
Highlights:
Quarry Park member, Martin Smith unleashed an ace with an Avenger SS FLX on hole 1 – straight at the basket, no messing about!
The players were treated to a skills clinic from the worlds best. After a brief Q & A session the World Champions Nate Doss, Avery Jenkins and Valarie Jenkins demonstrated some long, long drives. Avery threw a very impressive 198 yards to claim the British Distance record, followed closely by a 191 from Nate.
After solid performances from Del Robbins (best round: 49 on Saturday morning) and Jester Wilson (best round: 48 on Sunday morning), they made it into the Open final took 3rd and 4th spot respectively. Chris O’Brien gave a good bid for the final (best round: 53 on Saturday afternoon), but finished 4 shots behind Women World Champion Valerie Jenkins to come in 6th place.
In the AM’s Rick Murphy held his own and shot 3 rounds to finish on level par, a 4 shot lead after a courageous come back from Jared Farell. James Luton and Jed Farrell tied for equal 4th and tournament director Rich Wood took 5th spot.
All in all, a very exciting 3 days with many, many highlights. Check out the Cyclone video... soming very soon. Some great throws, some great people and plenty of sunshine. What more could you ask for?
