Chris Wins Disc Golf Tournament!
24-09-2007
Practice, practice, practice... and a passion for making discs fly!
After lot's of practice during the summer using the DISCatcher Traveler portable targets, Chris lives the dream to win his first BDGA Amateur Tournament. His prize was a loaf of 'Ro-zeees' home baked bread and three brand new Innova drivers.
The British Disc Golf Association 2-day 'Equinox' tournament took place at the Burnlaw Centre, Northumberland on 22nd and 23rd September. The event attracted over 35 players from throughout Great Britain, including a few North American players. It was business as usual for Frisbee legend and Disc Golf grand master Derek Robins of Quarry Park Disc Golf Centre, who won the Pro Division event and an even bigger loaf of Ro-zeees home baked bread!
Chris spent a lot of time this summer playing disc golf, and probably twice as long talking, thinking and dreaming about disc golf. Friends and colleagues Rick Murphy and Simon Fox also took part in the tournament, along with Rick's sidekick Dom the 'Dommage' Domster. Simon won an Elite Z Wasp for best rookie while Rick and Dom also played very well and are motivated to take part in more disc golf tournaments next year.
During the summer months, using just 6 Traveler targets, Chris and his buddies regularly made up 18 hole disc golf courses at the 'Centre of the Universe' Disc Golf course, which is situated on local farmland. They worked hard on their techniques, emulating the top American players featured on YouTube. A big part of the learning curve was also getting to know how all the discs perform, especially in windy conditions.
The key to winning the final on Sunday afternoon was thanks to Rick and Simon who assisted Chris to get into the zone with his putting, by focusing on a smooth technique and hitting the 'eye of the storm' with his Pro Challenger - the key formula to putting success! In the final, Rick caddied for Chris and installed some winning thoughts in his mind. The general message was to attack the basket! And that's just what he did... after a nervous 4 on the first hole, he went on to shoot plenty of 3's and a couple of 2's to clinch a victory at his first ever tournament. Chris had is sights set on a good performance, so earlier in the week he hooked up with personal trainer Phil Cordell from Fit For You to get the mind and body working in unison:

Chris will continue working on his game over the winter in preparation for next season. To date, Burnlaw is the only course Chris has played, so he's looking forward to playing at other venues throughout Great Britain, such as the Isle of Mull, Dorset, Essex and Warwickshire. He's also considering moving straight up to the Open division to play alongside the pros - always hungry for a challenge!
