It was a good turnout at the Croydon Cyclone at the weekend. The weather started off a little wet on the Saturday, but improved over the weekend. By Sunday afternoon the sun came out and it was a beautiful day for Disc Golf.
Chris played ok-ish, coming 7th in the Am Division. Andy Cotgreve played consistently well to win the division. Meanwhile in the Open Division, our Bristol based coach played very well indeed, he struck an ace on the first hole on Sunday morning which helped put him in a strong position for the final. In the 9 hole final, Matt and Derek Robins tussled it out, and Matt struck yet another ace to the delight of the gallery! It was on the 4th final hole (9th hole) - the wind was from the left and Matt crafted an exquisit turnover drive with his Avenger SS ESP that crash into the chains, right in the 'eye of the storm'.

It put the pressure back on Del, who responded well. Matt had a 12 metre opportunity to clinch the win on the last, but missed - doh! So the pair set of on a sudden death play-off. They both birdied the first two holes, but Matt's rescue shot from a dodgey drive on the 3rd drifted too far away from the basket while Del shot a comfortable  par 3 to seal the victory.

It was a great attempt from Matt, and playing on this form, his first win won't be too far away. the event was well organised, thanks to all the hard work by Richard Wood and his gang!  Read more about the Croydon Cyclone

The shot of the weekend was definitely Matt's ace in the final. There were two other shots that stood out as pretty special, observed by Chris:

I was standing up by the basket of 13 looking down as Fergie prepared for his drive on the 12th tee. He released the disc with excellent form and I watched it fly behind the trees and then re-appeared and gently brushed against the final tree which released small shower of blossom. This didn't affect the flight of the disc which carried on to clip the top of the basket. I looked back to see Fergie's reaction and high fives all round. It all seemed to happen in slow motion and was a magical Disc Golf moment.

The second shot that really caught my imagination was by 12 year old Ben Bruce. It was on hole 15 in the Am final. I fairly long drive down hill that demands a long turnover to get close to the basket. It was a drive that I had struggled to execute that weekend, so to see this little fella from Scotland effortlessly send his disc to within 5 metres was awesome. I found it very inspiring and I have a deeper understanding of the importance of technique over power. Nice shot Ben!!!
