Playing in the Wind
For players wanting to control their discs in with consistency in windy conditions
PUTTING IN THE WIND
Below is a diagram based on Ken Climo's advice for putting in windy conditions.

Practice this! 200 putts everyday for 3 months should do the trick!
More strategies for putting, distance and the 'inner game' from the top man can be found on the 'How to' section of his website www.kenclimo.com.
Driving in the Wind
Playing in the wind is always an extra challenge!
Mastery of playing in the wind comes from loads of experience, however here are some basics;
Throwing into a headwind
- Will cause the disc to turnover either you will need to release the disc a little more IO or you need to use a more overstable disc
- Heavier discs will fly better into a headwind
- Disc will curve more into the wind
Tailwinds
- Will generally push the disc down so try to throw with as little mung angle as possible and slightly higher.
- Roll curve shots fly further than hyzer shots.
- Lightweight discs with lots of glide with fly further downwind - eg archangel
- Tailwinds will also keep the disc flying straighter too, aim with a straighter line when playing a roll curve or a hyzer shot.
Crosswinds
Crosswinds will lift the disc if it gets to the underside of the disc and will push down your shots when hitting the top of the disc. This can be used to gain more distance - ride the wind eg. throw roll curve with wind from the right or can be used to push down the disc to retain accuracy.
Good tips for playing in the wind
Play percentages!
- Leave yourself downwind putts - aim your approach shots to land upwind of the target.
- Don't be afraid to lay up - even throw upside down, sliders or grenades to finish close.
- Running for a 2 from 30ft in the wind leaving yourself with 15ft back into a strong wind for 3 that may turn into 4 or 5, or layup for certain 3?
- Play for pars two sensible safe shots being pushed down by the wind than 1 gliding on it that may go anywhere?
- Aim to drive on long holes to leave yourself playing your approach across or down wind even if not the shortest line to the basket.
- Throw firm with lots of spin, discs will hyzer and float off when they run out of zzz's
- The stillest air is at about head height as winds get stronger higher up and lower there is a strong ground effect.
- At headheight is where your best able to judge the direction and speed of the wind - because you're in it!
