Games for Teens

Here's some good Ultimate drills to practice your skills with your mates. More games coming soon...

3 Player Switch

There are 3 roles: the thrower, the receiver and the marker. It's quite similar to ‘piggy in the middle’, but here, the central parson marks the thrower very closely. Meanwhile, the receiver makes cuts left and right until the thrower makes a pass to her. The defender has to make it difficult for the thrower, but is not allowed to touch him/her or the disc (until it becomes air-born). The thrower must not ‘travel’ with the disc - only pivoting is allowed. After each throw the roles switch:

  • the thrower follows their pass to become the marker to the receiver,

  • the receiver then becomes the new thrower,

  • the marker becomes the new receiver.

This activity is more of a drill than a game, but is a great warm-up, especially for Ultimate.

Tip  At first, it’s a good idea for the marker to be passive, or even hold their hands behind their back to give the thrower a chance. Meanwhile the thrower can use fakes to win enough space to make a forehand or backhand pass. The receiver should endeavor to make ‘v’ cuts to both sides in order to open up an angle for a pass around the marker.

Country Mile

The Country Mile is a popular drill for players looking to practice their long hover throws (used to ‘Pull’ in Ultimate) and jump catches (‘Skying’). So once players can throw a disc long and straight, the Country Mile is a good activity to play. The disc is thrown back and forth between 2 groups of 3 or 4 players of equal height, approximately 15m to 40m apart.

The disc is thrown very long and high, aiming to make the disc hover gently above the heads of the opposite group. The receivers must compete for the disc by jumping and reaching up to pick the disc out of the air. Pushing, holding or climbing is not permitted.

This game demands good power and accuracy with the throwing combined with the ability to 'read' the flight of the disc as it flies, then jump up high to catch one handed.

The disc is sent back and forth with the players taking it in turns to throw.
