What is Disc Golf?

Disc Golf is similar to traditional golf, the general idea being to make the object (the ball or disc) hit a target in as few ‘shots’ as possible. The game began in the USA in the 1960’s when players threw their Frisbees® at targets around parks and college campuses. Tree trunks, lamp posts, seats, gates and other similar objects where used as targets. In the 1980’s Disc Golf grew in popularity in North America and there are now hundreds of purpose-built courses set up throughout the continent - most of them are free to play! Disc golf has since gradually spread around the world and here in the UK there are currently 15 permanent courses established. Temporary courses can now be quickly and easily set up in parkland or countryside using lightweight portable targets such as the DISCatcher Traveler.

How to Play

The objective is to hit the target in as few throws as possible. Begin each hole with the first throw from a designated 'tee' area or marker. Each subsequent throw must then be taken from the point where the disc comes to rest.  Golf etiquette should be applied to Disc Golf at all levels of ability - for example, the player furthest from the hole should play first. Small groups of 3 or 4 players complete a course of pre-determined holes. Players can either keep a count of their scores in their heads or a simple scorecard can be used. Find out more about Disc Golf and learn the basic rules from the World Flying Disc Federation.

Golf Discs

A wide range of golf discs have been produced. There are 3 main types of disc: drivers, mid-range discs and putters. For beginners and casual play, any quality flying disc can be used. The Discraft Sky-Styler has a good balance of distance and accuracy, while the Aerobie Superdisc is also suitable, especially for young players.

Targets

The Disc Golf targets used today are baskets with metal chains that catch the disc.

  • Portable baskets such as the DISCatcher Traveller are also available.
  • These enable you to play wherever you want, whenever you want.
  • They are quick and easy to set up and pack away.
  • A set of three are all you need to design your very own 9-hole course.

Where to Play?

Disc Golf can be played in school grounds, parks, in and around woodland or out in the wilderness. Targets can be just about anything - whatever is available.  It’s a good idea to incorporate buildings or trees to curve around, boundary fences and walls for ‘out of bounds’ hazards (incurring a 1 shot penalty), and other obstacles to throw under or over... get creative! Guard against making the course too long… it’s best if all players are able to reach the target within 2 or 3 throws. The key to making a good course is to ensure it suits the level of ability so they have FUN! Students at the University of Washington have established a rather impressive 18 hole course around the grounds of their campus... check it out!
