INTRODUCTION TO DISC SPORTS
A powerful skills program designed for primary and secondary school teachers, community sports coaches and young leaders. Endorsed by the UK Ultimate Association and equivalent to the UKU Leader Award, this course really enables participants to ‘learn by doing’.
The specific content and delivery style can be tailored for key stage 1 & 2 or 3 & 4, Special Schools and Further Education needs. This 3.5 hour practical session covers a surprisingly wide range of fun and dynamic activities to enable Frisbee to be enjoyed by all ages, abilities and walks of life. Disc Sports for Schools Handbook (with curriculum links) provided.
This course has been running for 5 years, based on man years of teaching Disc Sports to children in schools throughout the UK.
Disc Sports can be played all year round, indoor or outdoor, ideal for out of school clubs, sports festivals or as part of the P.E. curriculum key stages 1 to 5.
Participants will learn:
Fundamental throwing and catching techniques, advanced disc flight control and team-play skills.- Simplified coaching points for effective skills transfer to children and students.
- How to play a range of fun and dynamic progressive disc activities including exciting throw and catch games, target games, individual and team challenges, flow drills, Field Events, Disc Golf, Ultimate and other official Disc Sports that can be adapted for beginner groups.
- Which discs to use for a given situation, activity and ability.
- Framework for inter and intra-school competitons for Key Stage 2 to 4.
Now in it’s 4th year, this course is engineered so that participants experience an enlightening journey into the world of Frisbee. The structured learning process throughout installs the key skills and concepts needed to play the classic invasion game Ultimate Frisbee. This is the focus of the final portion of the course, where the rules are explained together with introductory-level approaches and techniques for offence and defensive play. We then launch into a game to bring all the learning from the course together. Variations are also introduced to help make the game more inclusive and accessible for younger children and hard-to-reach groups.

- Course duration: 3.5 hours
- Large indoor sports hall required. Additional outdoor space desirable, but not essential.
