Disc Golf Leader Training Course
Looking to get groups going with Disc Golf in your school or community? Then this course is for you!
Disc Golf is a superb activity for engaging everyone and anyone and is the easiest disc activity to gain immediate success and enjoyment. What’s more, there’s huge scope for progression to regional, national and international competition – with support from the British Disc Golf Association, the Professional Disc Golf Association and Catch the Spirit!
Disc Golf Leader Award
This course leads participants from basic through to advance techniques with fun activities and insightful teaching points. The course follows on naturally from the ‘Introduction to Disc Sports’ course and can be delivered on the same day for group bookings.
The course is ideal for existing Disc Golfers, Sports Coaches or PE teachers who intend to teach the game to new players in both group and one-to-one situations. For school teachers and coaches, the course provides the foundation of skills and knowledge to deliver a 12-week teaching plan and competitions. For group bookings the course can be tailored to meet the needs of Key Stage 1 & 2 or 3 & 4 teaching staff.
The Disc Golf Leader Award is a pre-requisite qualification for the Level 1 Coaching Award.
Practical Element (4 hours)
- Develop skill and understanding in a broad repertoire of throws including putting, approaching, distance driving backhand and forehand, rollers and rescue shots, with key coaching points for each throw.
- How to run inclusive and engaging introductory group coaching sessions for beginners using a range of fun games and activities to inspire participants and develop their skills.
- Learn best practice on how to plan, set up and deliver sessions safely and efficiently, with creative hole design for indoor and outdoor spaces.
- Use standardised Disc Golf challenges for competition and skills assessment.
Leadership in Action (2 hours)
Plan and deliver minimum of 2 hours of Disc Golf Leadership in the following contexts:
- Introductory Disc Golf Sessions to groups (min 30 mins).
- One-to-one coaching interventions (min 30 mins).
- Self-coaching (up to 30 mins).
- Report findings in log-book and submit for approval and certification.

Venue
There are a series of courses available throughout the UK on existing Disc Golf Courses. Or for group bookings:
- Parkland area with a variety of trees, undulations and other obstacles in the landscape, or;
- School playing fields can be used to make interesting and challenging Disc Golf activities using artificial obstacles and hazards.
For group bookings: Min: 10 Max: 20.
Course Schedule (Total Duration: 4 hours)
PART I – Theory and Warm-up 60 mins
- Motivations and goals of the participant. Who & how will we coach?
- Body mechanics, generating power, importance of body position
- Understanding the flight of golf discs, trajectory and angle of release.
- Preparation and warm-ups for Disc Golf
Break 5 mins
PART II – Short Game Skills & Activities 80 mins
- Putting Skills and Games
- Approaching Skills
- Special and Rescue Throws
- Creative hole design for approach and short-hole games
Break 5 mins
PART III - Driving Skills & Activities 80 mins
- Driving Skills (backhand, forehand, rollers)
- Driving activities
- Session planning and evaluation, log-book and assessment info
- Skill Shot Challenge (skills assessment tool)
Wrap up and feedback 10 mins
